The EuroNoize project celebrates diversity in the European alternative scene. This May at London venue Scala, the project put on a concert of eleven bands from all across Europe, an alternative version of the glittering spectacle of Eurovision. The Prague “echo” of EuroNoize will take place on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 PM at Bike Jesus. The concert will feature the “intergalactic pop” of Serbian duo E-P-P, which finished in fourth place in EuroNoize’s online fan vote.

The evening at Bike Jesus will begin with a discussion with music journalists and scholars (David Ko?ínek, Martýýna Svobodová, Miloš Hroch, Judita Císa?ová) about the relationship between popular music and visual art. Prague post-punk band Vellocet Roll will play at 8:30, and the evening will conclude with local local up-and-coming synthpop artist kurisutaru.

EuroNoize is the joint creation of the London-based Israeli artistic duo Pil and Galia Kollectiv, the Prague organization Are, and Kunsthall Oslo. Another component of the project is a EuroNoize exhibition currently open at KunstHall Oslo (https://www.euronoize.eu/exhibition), where visitors can play music videos and films in a giant jukebox. The exhibition will run until October 27. In preparation is a vinyl record with recordings from bands involved in EuroNoize, as well as a publication mapping how the artistic and musical scenes in individual countries have grown together.


E-P-P
Serbian duo E-P-P’s work features playful minimalist songs formatted like advertising jingles. Musicians Katie Woznicki and Vladimir Nikolic claim that they are more of a travel agency than a band, and their songs, ads for products that cannot be bought. They debuted with the EP To je samo reklama / It’s Strictly Commercial, and last year they released the live album Turizam Bez Granica / Tourism without Borders, which included hit tunes like Koka-Kola and ?evap?i?i. This is their first concert in the Czech Republic.

Velocet Roll
Prague post-punk group Vellocet Roll is one of the great discoveries of the current season of the independent scene. In February they released their debut album A Man Asleep, which featured a distinctive mix of psychedelia, noise, and brooding underground rock. The album was produced by the duo of František P?evorovský a Dominik Gajarský.

kurisutaru
Kurisutaru is what happens when Japanese people try to say the word “crystal”, and the Prague solo project of that name is a recent discovery on the local alternative scene. His dark synthpop combines poppy catchiness with the decadence of Suicide. Last year he managed to release two EPs – his debut Preset, dedicated to all the girls he has kissed, and a follow-up, the “aggressive” Vice!. He also went on tour as the opening act for Please The Trees.

How important is a musician’s image? What do their stage presentation and album covers say about them? The relationship between pop and fine art will be the subject of a panel discussion featuring David Ko?ínek, a scholar of audiovisual art and member of the group Rafani; Miloš Hroch, a music journalist and the author of K?i?ím: „To jsem já“ / I shout “That’s me!”; Judita Císa?ová, a musician and member of the editorial staff of Radio Wave; and Martýýna Svobodová, a member of DJ collective Blazing Bullets and co-founder of audiovisual event collective KSK audio. The debate will be moderated by music journalist Karel Veselý.

The Oslo dimension of EuroNoize manifests as a gallery-scale video jukebox, with a 5 metre screen, a 2K sound system and a diverse, deep but hand-picked selection of rare films, home movies, music clips and artists’ video, from Derek Jarman to Mutamassik; from Los Inciados to Rachel Maclean; from Holy Toy to Maoupa Mazzocchetti.

EuroNoize is a project exploring the histories connecting DiY music and the visual arts and the informal networks upon which this cultural activity is built. The project was initiated by the artists Pil and Galia Kollectiv and is produced in collaboration with the University of Reading and ARE, Prague. The EuroNoize screening programme was selected by Pil & Galia Kollectiv, Paula Guerra, Simon Reynolds, Matt Worsley, ARE and Kunsthall Oslo among many other contributors.

More on EuroNoize: At the heart of the EuroNoize project is an alternative music showcase modeled on the Eurovision Song Context, in which musicians were invited to consider the interplay of local and global identities in representing their country with a specially commissioned song and video. The live event in London was streamed online and broadcast at partner venues. A conference at the University of Reading explored the histories connecting DiY music and the visual arts and investigated the challenges inherent in formalising the informal networks upon which this cultural activity is built. Conference proceedings will lead to a publication in which these themes will be expanded. Finally, the music produced for this live event will be released as a record and disseminated internationally together with the book and an exhibition at Kunsthall Oslo. The project’s explicit aim is to think of and implement strategies and modes of cooperation between art institutions, DiY musicians and internally between various bands across the continent to facilitate the continuation of these often short-lived practices.

HOSPITALE Project is pleased to host the London-based artist duo Pil and Galia Kollectiv as artists-in-residence in 2019, and present their exhibition ‘(In)visible Propaganda’. Pil and Galia Kollectiv have been interested in associations between 20th-century Modernism and various issues in contemporary capitalist society, and visualise them in their works of performance, video, installation, and collage. They try to make hidden propaganda in contemporary society visible by appropriating the aesthetics of Modernist propaganda of the past. They view contemporary society, which is experiencing accelerating developments in technology and rapid changes in values, through the lens of modern history, and suggest their own interpretations of various movements that impact on the future of our society. Their appropriation of Modernist styles and ideas, however, should strictly be distinguished from nostalgia for the historicised past or a reactionary attitude simply going back to old-fashioned ideas. Instead, it should be understood as a creative and challenging way of understanding issues in the contemporary world and of creating new images of the future. By showing a selection of videos and documentations of performance pieces from their career so far, the exhibition presents the artists’ continuous interest in the theme explained above, and the unique style of production that comes from their DIY spirit. Also for this occasion, Pil and Galia develop their interest in the history of Modernism in Japan by conducting research on theatrical works by Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop) from the 1950s and Osaka Expo in 1970. Their research will result in a new performance piece and a video, which suggest a relationship between Modernism and Late Capitalism in a Japanese context. Former Yokota Clinic, which represents an ideal example of hospital architecture of the time, will be revived by Pil and Galia to offer a backdrop to the work that also functions as a guide into the future.

Live Performance ‘Souvenir From The Ghost Pavilion’ produced by Pil and Galia Kollectiv, and performed by Shiori Shinoda 19 July 2019, 18:30 – A live performance, produced for this exhibition, will be held using the space of the Former Yokota Clinic as its background. Inspired by Noh theatre and theatrical works by Jikken Kobo of the 1950s, this work revives a moment in Japanese Modernism as a ghost and her memory.

Post-performance Talk 19 July 2019, 19:30 – After the live performance, Pil and Galia will talk about their research for the new work and its relationship to their work so far.

Artists' Profile:

Pil and Galia Kollectiv Pil Kollectiv and Galia Kollectiv were both born in Jerusalem, Israel. They have been based in London since 2000. They both studied English Literature and History at Hebrew University (Jerusalem) and obtained masters degrees and a PhD in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University (London). They have had solo exhibitions at public galleries including the Showroom (London, 2007), SI Art Space (Sheffield, 2008), Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts (Manukau City, 2010), Pump House Gallery (London, 2016), Norton Gallery (Belfast, 2017), and Centre Clark (Montreal, 2018). They have also participated in group exhibitions and art festivals in Europe including the 5th Berlin Biennale (Kunst Werke, Berlin, 2008), the 2nd Herzliya Biennail (Herzliya, 2009), and Mirror City (Hayward Gallery, London, 2014).

EuroNoize is a live music event modelled on the Eurovision song contest, but featuring a bizarre cast of DiY, alternative and underground subpop bands. Taking place on May 23rd 2019 at the Scala, it features musicians from across Europe who will perform one new song in front of a live audience. The event will also be streamed live online so you can cast your vote from afar for your favourite performance of the evening in case you can’t make it. EuroNoize is a celebration of the obscure, the niche and the uncategorizable, music that runs deeper than national borders. It represents the secret international fellowship of punx and weirdos stretching from Russia to Ireland.

The exhibition The Sleepless Alliance resists the parasomniac dystopias of current political genealogies, as an exercise of non-fiction. Taking the position of the tangible dreamer, invited artists experiment with producing concrete future imaginaries, through fabulation, improvisation and resilient commonality. The works on display reflect on the potentiality of an intermission in present social order opening up the possibility for different states of awareness to enact new ways of living together. As tactical catalysts for articulating possible futures, the artworks presented engineer social relationships that aim to challenge the present political malaise and propose collective insurgence. Inciting new imaginary alliances and proposed wakefulness, the exhibition agitates for radical re-composition of existing relations, as it repeats the mantra - the future is not given.

Curated by Jason Waite, Margarida Mendes and Kenji Kubota. The Sleepless Alliance is part of the ongoing project Art for the Next Decade developed by Kenji Kubota Art Office with support of Arts Council Tokyo Project and interviews developed in collaboration with an advisory committee from Pembroke JCR.
